When we think of dental sealants, they’re often associated with children. However, sealants are also highly beneficial for adults. Sealants work by protecting teeth, particularly molars, by sealing the deep grooves and crevices in their chewing surfaces. According to a study by the American Dental Association, adults who receive sealants can effectively prevent cavities on otherwise healthy teeth.
What Exactly Are Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth. While they don’t replace the need for daily brushing and flossing, sealants serve as an extra layer of defense to protect against decay.
Even with proper oral care, there are areas of your mouth that are difficult to clean. Molars, for example, have deep grooves, known as “pits” and “fissures.” These grooves can trap food particles and bacteria, making it easy for decay to develop. A sealant helps by filling in these grooves and creating a smooth surface that’s easier to clean.
Your dentist can determine if sealants are a good option for you. Many patients are surprised by how quick and painless the application process is, which includes the following steps:
- Teeth are thoroughly cleaned.
- The teeth are dried and treated with a special solution to prepare them for sealing.
- The liquid sealant is applied and flows into the grooves of the teeth.
- A curing light is used to harden the sealant, sealing off the grooves and creating a smooth, protective barrier.
Caring for Your Sealants
Sealants don’t require any special maintenance, and you can continue brushing and flossing as usual. However, there are a few precautions to keep in mind. It’s best to use a toothbrush with soft bristles and toothpaste that contains remineralizing agents, such as hydroxyapatite. Be mindful of consuming foods that may stain sealants, such as berries, coffee, tea, or red wine. Rinsing your mouth after consuming these can reduce the chance of staining. Additionally, sticky, chewy, or hard foods can wear down sealants, so it’s wise to limit these in your diet.
During your visits, our Opelika dental office will check your sealants for any signs of wear. With proper care and regular professional cleanings, your sealants can last up to 10 years.
